Team India has maintained an unbeaten record at the T20 World Cup so far, but a persistent issue has been the lack of runs from star batter Virat Kohli. During the group stage in New York, Kohli struggled, managing only five runs across three innings without reaching double figures.

In the Super 8 match against Afghanistan in Barbados on Friday, Kohli started cautiously but fell while trying to accelerate, scoring a run-a-ball 24.

Lara backs Kohli to come good

Despite Kohli's ongoing struggles, West Indies legend Brian Lara found a positive aspect in his measured innings, emphasizing the importance of time spent at the crease in India’s Super 8 opener.

India dominated their group with convincing victories over giant killers Ireland, arch-rivals Pakistan, and the co-hosts USA, and continued their strong performance by defeating Afghanistan in their first Super Eight match. However, Kohli's struggles have persisted across all four innings in the tournament. Lara, one of the game's greats, remains optimistic about Kohli's prospects for the remainder of the competition.

"24 off 24, you can say that’s not great but the most important thing is that he spent some time out there. India has got one step closer to winning this trophy. I believe that Virat Kohli is just gonna go from strength to strength as he comes down to the Caribbean. He’s going to Antigua next, you’re gonna see him go out there and plough and plough, he’s gonna get runs,"  Brian Lara said on Star Sports.

Kohli was India's highest run-scorer in the previous T20 World Cup edition, and the team will look to him to deliver in the remaining Super Eight matches, including the highly anticipated clash against Australia on Monday.
