Indian captain Rohit Sharma led his team to an emphatic 4-1 series win over the visiting Englishmen, despite trailing 0-1 at one stage of their five-match rubber. Seasoned speedster Jasprit Bumrah, one of the many architects of India’s win, unfurled a spellbinding display of fast bowling at Vizag to helm his side’s 106-run victory to bring the series to levelling terms in the second Test.

Following India’s triumphant result, captain Sharma has now heaped lavish praise on his ace paceman, one which even prompted the latter to rise to the number one rankings on ICC’s bowling charts.

Rohit Sharma praises ‘unreal’ Jasprit Bumrah spell

Jasprit Bumrah seized six English wickets, including that of Ollie Pope with a stump-shattering peach, in the first innings of the Vizag Test back in February this year. Bumrah’s figures of 6-45 helped Team India gain a 143-run lead at the halfway stage of the game.

With Shubman Gill’s second innings century setting up a 399-run target for England, the Indian speedster added three more victims to his tally to secure Test-winning figures of 9-91.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has now acknowledged Bumrah’s spell on a flat Vizag surface and hailed the speedster’s ability to generate reverse swing on both sides of the wicket. Sharma even claimed that he had never seen any other Indian fast bowler bowl the way Bumrah did in the Test match. The Indian skipper said:

“That Jasprit Bumrah spell in Vizag was unreal. On a flat pitch, 35-36 degrees, not easy for a fast bowler to bowl that kind of a spell. There comes Bumrah, gets the ball to reverse both sides and brings you into the game. I have never seen any fast bowler in India bowl the way he has bowled to get those wickets.”

Both Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah will now turn up for the Mumbai Indians in the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. The two cricketers were retained by the team management back in November 2023 during the IPL 2024 retention phase.

To be led by Hardik Panya, the Mumbai Indians franchise will face Gujarat Titans in their opening match of the tournament on March 24 in Ahmedabad.
