Manoj Tiwary slams Gautam Gambhir [Source: @Jitendr_Meghwal/x.com]
Gautam Gambhir has seen criticism flung at him from all corners after India’s humiliating 2-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa in their recent Test series. India’s performance under Gambhir has seen a significant decline in home Tests, with the team getting whitewashed in two out of the three series.
Defending himself after the loss, Gambhir said that India has won the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup under his reign. However, this did not sit well with former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary.
The 40-year-old claimed that Gambhir had no part to play in India’s win. He believes that the former head coach, Rahul Dravid, the former skipper, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli built that team. According to him, the team would have won anyway.
"I saw a clip of him claiming that he has won the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This team was built by Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, and, before that, Virat Kohli. Even if Gambhir wasn't the coach of Team India for these two tournaments, India would have won anyway because the team was already made. It is very unfortunate to see a white-ball mentor leading India as a head coach. If you don't have the experience at the ground level, how do you expect to give results at the top level? It is next to impossible," he said in an interaction with the Hindustan Times.
“I knew things were not going well,” says Tiwary
Tiwary said that India falling to its knees was inevitable after their 408-run loss in Guwahati. He said that the constant chopping and changing to the side made it very evident and demanded that there should be a separate coach for red ball.
"To be honest, the writing was on the wall. It had to happen. I knew things were not going well; the process they want to follow is not the right strategy or plan. There was a lot of chopping and changing, which was very evident. That could have been in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the home series against New Zealand and now against South Africa," Tiwary said.
"Absolutely. There is no question about it. (whether India should have a separate red-ball coach). It's high time they take this decision to save Indian Test cricket. That's the bottom line,” he concluded.
The loss against South Africa has marked India’s second home whitewash in a year. They had earlier lost to New Zealand in their three-match series. India also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2015 under Gambhir’s regime. However, they have seen some success under him in Tests, winning the home series against the West Indies and drawing the away series against England.
