In a significant development, Dubai Capitals have named veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka as their captain for the upcoming International League T20 season. Shanaka, who was recently released to the IPL mini auction pool by the Gujarat Titans, replaces Australian great David Warner in the role.
Shanaka to lead Dubai Capitals in ILT20
Dasun Shanaka was an integral member of the Dubai Capitals setup that clinched the coveted ILT20 trophy last season. Considering his experience and seniority, the Capitals' think tank has handed over the captaincy duties to the Lankan ace, expecting him to play a crucial role as they aim to defend their title.
In his reaction, Shanaka expressed his gratitude towards the Dubai Capitals management for showing faith in him. He also highlighted the quality and depth of their squad, promising an inspirational performance in the competition's upcoming edition.
"It's a huge honour to lead Dubai Capitals. The franchise has shown tremendous belief in me, and I'm excited to take the responsibility. We have a balanced and hungry squad, and I'm confident we can play fearless cricket and make our fans proud this season," Dasun Shanaka said.
Dasun Shanaka is one of Sri Lanka's most experienced active players in the T20 circuit. The 34-year-old has featured in 117 T20 International matches, scoring 1657 runs and scalping 41 wickets with his gentle medium pace.
The veteran cricketer has captained the Lankan Lions in 51 T20Is, leading them to 23 wins in the shortest format. He recently replaced the outgoing Charith Asalanka as Sri Lanka's stand-in skipper for the T20I tri-series in Pakistan, leading them to a much-needed victory over Zimbabwe.
Shanaka excelled as a finisher for Dubai Capitals in their triumphant 2024-25 ILT20 campaign. The all-rounder hammered 164 runs at a blistering strike rate of 202.46, guiding the Capitals to glory through his scintillating stroke-play.
