Shubman Gill has been named the new captain of India’s Test team, and Yuvraj Singh is getting a lot of praise for it. According to Yograj Singh, it was Yuvraj's backing and knowledge of cricket that brought Gill along to be the cricketer he is today.

After Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, there was a big question about who would lead the team next. Many experts suggested Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant.

But the selectors chose 25-year-old Gill to guide India into a new era, starting with a five-match Test series against England from June 20.

Yuvraj Singh’s Guidance Helped Shubman Gill, Says Yograj Singh

Former Indian all-rounder and World Cup winner Yuvraj Singh has mentored Shubman Gill over the past few years. He worked closely with him during Gill's early struggles and helped him shape his mindset and technique.

Hence, his father, Yograj Singh, believes Yuvraj’s guidance and support helped Gill become this new-age star.

"The credit for Shubman Gill's performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh. If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh's guidance will play and has played an essential role in that. Someone like Yuvraj Singh, the greatest cricketing brain in the world, taking Gill under his wing is a big thing," Yograj told ANI.

Notably, the 25-year-old is also leading Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 and has done well, scoring over 600 runs and taking his team to the playoffs.

Understandably, the upcoming Test series against England will be Gill’s first as captain. It will be difficult, particularly without senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's absence in Test cricket after a bad series in Australia.

When Yuvraj Saw Potential In Shubman

Back in 2023, Yuvraj Singh hailed Shubman Gill as the next big thing in Indian cricket, praising his unmatched work ethic and focus. Speaking to The Week, Yuvraj said Gill works "four times harder than others" and has what it takes to be the best of his generation. Moreover, he pointed out Gill's consistency in ODIs and his memorable 91 at the Gabba to predict success for him in Australia, South Africa, and England.
