Former England captain Alastair Cook has made a bold call ahead of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi, advocating for the dropping of struggling batsman Jonny Bairstow. England's recent 434-run defeat against India has sparked discussions about the team's composition, with Bairstow's poor form coming under scrutiny.

Bairstow has endured a torrid time on the subcontinent, managing just 102 runs from six innings at an average of 26. Following his duck in Rajkot, Cook expressed concern for Bairstow's form and proposed a change in the lineup.

Here's what he said:

"He's had a tough tour so far. And India is a very hard place to continue going on that treadmill. I'm taking Jonny out of the firing line, to protect the player," Cook stated.

In place of Bairstow, Cook recommended the inclusion of Dan Lawrence, emphasizing the need for a fresh perspective and said: "Someone who is fresh and clear of all the debris so far in this series."

While England coach Brendon McCullum had earlier expressed confidence in Bairstow's ability to overcome his slump, Cook's stance reflects the growing pressure on the team to make tactical adjustments in the face of India's dominance.

The decision to drop Bairstow, a seasoned campaigner, underscores England's willingness to prioritize performance over reputation as they seek to salvage pride in the remaining matches of the series. England will now lockhorns with India at Ranchi from Feb 23 onwards.
