Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made a new rule about how much time players can spend with their families during cricket tours. This rule limits players from having their families with them for too long while they are on tours abroad. While some people support this rule, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is not happy about it.
Suresh Raina, known for his strong batting and calm under pressure, spoke openly about how important family support is for players, especially when they are away from home. He said on a popular show that having family around helps players stay strong mentally and perform better on the field.
Raina Opposes BCCI’s Rule Limiting Family Time On Tours
Raina gave the example of Virat Kohli, India star batter. He said on Ranveer Allahbadia on his YouTube channel,
“It is very important to have family on the tour. I’m against BCCI’s latest rule. Family helps players turn their form around. If Virat (Kohli) isn’t in the best of form, and he sees his daughter, he will score runs and make a statement.”
Raina also shared his personal experience from 2018 when he played very well in a series against South Africa.
“Family needs to be together, and if not for my wife, I wouldn’t have been the Player of the match back in 2018 (against South Africa).”
Besides talking about form and runs, Raina also emphasised the mental pressure players face. Players at the international level are always under pressure. Raina pointed out that mental health support and family presence can make a big difference during such challenging moments.
What Is New BCCI Family Rule?
Earlier this year, the BCCI introduced new guidelines that limit the amount of family time players can have on overseas tours. According to the rule, for tours that last more than 45 days, players’ partners and children under 18 can visit only once per series (like Tests, ODIs, or T20s) and stay for up to two weeks.
While the BCCI believes this helps players focus more on cricket, many, including Raina, feel that the emotional and mental support from family is equally important for a player’s success.
