In the lead-up to the second T20I against Australia at Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium, Indian batter Tilak Varma has expressed his determination to maintain a clear and straightforward mindset.
Tilak Varma reveals tactics for IND vs AUS 2nd T20I
The first T20I, held at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag on November 23, saw India narrowly defeat Australia, setting the stage for an exciting series. Reflecting on his performance and strategy in the first T20I, Varma mentioned his focused approach, particularly against leg spin bowling. He highlighted his role in the team and his intent to adhere to it for the upcoming matches.
“My mindset is simple. As I said before, I have got a role in the team. So I just want to stick to that role and I'll be clear with my mindset,” said Varma.
Varma, who scored 12 runs off 10 balls before being dismissed by Tanveer Sangha in the first match, highlighted his strategy of taking on the leg-spinner, considering the team's requirement for a high run rate at that stage. He expressed confidence in his captain Suryakumar Yadav to handle the fast bowlers effectively.
“My mindset was like in that situation, the leg spinner was bowling, so I want to take charge because we want 10 per over in that situation. So at that time my mindset was clear. If leg spinner is bowling, I'll go for him. So for fast bowlers, settled batsman, captain Surya bhai [Suryakumar Yadav] was batting. So I was confident that he can finish against the fast bowlers. So especially that over I want to charge the leg spinner,” added the young southpaw.
Suryakumar led from the front and contributed a remarkable 80 runs off just 42 balls, which included nine boundaries and four sixes. His innings, along with Ishan Kishan's 58 runs off 39 balls, were instrumental in India's chase of 209 runs in the opening match.
Meanwhile, the Indian team, under Suryakumar's leadership and featuring several new faces, is now aiming to secure a significant 2-0 lead in the series with the upcoming game in Thiruvananthapuram.
