In a significant development in the Indian Premier League (IPL), former India captain and ex-chief selector Kris Srikkanth expressed his astonishment over the rumours of Hardik Pandya's potential return to Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season. Srikkanth highlighted that if the deal materializes, it would be a substantial boost for the five-time champions.

Srikkanth envisages new era for Mumbai Indians with Hardik at helm

As the IPL 2024 approaches, all 10 teams are engaged in finalizing their squads, with the deadline set for November 26. Amidst various speculations, the most notable is the anticipated trade of Hardik from Gujarat Titans back to Mumbai Indians.

Reports suggest that the deal would involve a substantial all-cash transaction, with Mumbai Indians also compensating Gujarat Titans, who will then have an additional Rs 15 crore for the mini-auction scheduled on December 19.

Srikkanth commented on the situation, stating that Hardik's return to Mumbai Indians would be highly advantageous for the team. He praised Hardik as one of the best all-rounders globally and a thoughtful captain.

Srikkanth reminisced about Pandya's memorable performances against Chennai Super Kings in 2015 and emphasized the value he would bring as an all-rounder to the Mumbai squad.

"I hope the reports are true. It's a huge bonus for Mumbai Indians. Whatever you say, he is the captain of the T20I side for India. He has a winning charm, he is probably one of the best all-rounders in the world. He is a thinking captain too. Huge advantage, huge bonus for Mumbai Indians. MI needed an all-rounder," said Kris Srikkanth.

Furthermore, Srikkanth addressed the potential leadership transition in Mumbai Indians, comparing it to the smooth transitions seen in the Indian team, such as between Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma, and later between MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. He anticipates a seamless transition from Rohit to Hardik, continuing Mumbai Indians' legacy of success.

"It's about a smooth transition. It happened between Sachin and Rohit. Now it's time for Rohit to Hardik. It's going to be a smooth transition. At the end of the day, Rohit and Hardik share a wonderful relationship. Obviously, they will make Hardik Pandya the captain. Rohit Sharma will be a key figure and ensure a smooth transition. You need a smooth transition to avoid hiccups in the team. It will be like Guru-Shishya. Yes, Hardik will be leading the team, Rohit will be there. It will be a smooth transition like Dhoni and Kohli in the Indian team,” concluded the Indian veteran.
