Steve Smith could return in second Test (Source:@SelflessCricket,x.com)
Australian Test stalwart Steve Smith is edging closer to a return, with skipper Pat Cummins confirming that the right-hander has resumed batting practice in New York as part of his rehabilitation from a finger injury. Smith, who suffered a compound dislocation to his right little finger while fielding in the slips during the World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s, has been out of action since the incident.
Steve Smith Begins Batting Practice
Steve Smith flew to his home in New York after the injury, missing Australia's opening Test against West Indies in Barbados. However, ahead of the second Test in Grenada, Cummins revealed that the 35-year-old has begun hitting balls and is showing encouraging signs of recovery.
“He’s had a few hits over in New York, which I think was with a tennis ball and an incredi-ball,” Cummins told reporters after Australia’s win in the first Test. “I think his wound is looking good, so the next stage is to come over here and hit some balls in the nets.” according to a report by Cricket.com.au.
When Will Steve Smith Join Australia?
Smith is expected to rejoin the Australian squad in Bridgetown by Sunday and will undergo a fitness assessment before a final call is made on his selection. If cleared, Cummins confirmed that Smith will walk straight back into the XI at his usual No. 4 position for the second Test at Grenada.
Smith’s absence was felt in the first Test, where Australia were forced to rely on a combination of youth and experience to get over the line. Travis Head impressed with twin fifties on a challenging surface, and Beau Webster and Alex Carey added crucial second-inning half-centuries. However, the Australian batters were repeatedly tested by the fiery pace of Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales, who troubled the top order across both innings.
It would not be wrong to say that despite winning the match, Australia’s batting depth looked vulnerable in the absence of their seasoned campaigner.
Australia will aim to make it two wins from two in their new WTC cycle. At the same time, the West Indies will be eager to bounce back, especially if the bowler-friendly conditions in Grenada mirror those seen in Barbados.
