India’s new ODI captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are very much part of India’s future in the 50-over format. Gill said that the experience and match-winning abilities of both stalwarts are invaluable and not easily found.

Shubman Gill on Rohit, Kohli's ODI role

Speaking ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi, Gill addressed the growing speculation over whether India is preparing to move beyond the legendary duo in ODIs.

However, he made it indirectly clear that both Rohit and Kohli are part of their plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

"The experience that both of them have and the matches that they have won for India, there are very few players who have won so many matches for India. And the players who have such skills and qualities with this experience are very few. There are very few players in the world who have so much skill, quality and experience. So, in that sense, yes,” he said.

It is important to mention that this is Gill's first public comment on the future of Rohit and Kohli since being named the new ODI captain. The BCCI has recently handed over the ODI captaincy to Gill.

It would not be wrong to say that Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in the white-ball format. Under his astute leadership 'Men In Blue' have lifted the Champions Trophy 2025, and also ended as the runner-up in the 2023 World Cup.

With both Rohit and Kohli retiring from T20Is and Test cricket, ODIs remain the only format they are currently available for.

Neither player has played cricket since the IPL 2025, but both are expected to return later this month for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Kohli is currently in London, while Rohit is at home in Mumbai. According to reports, they will join the Indian squad in New Delhi before departing for Australia on October 15.
