In a huge revelation, Shubman Gill has admitted that he knew about his ODI captaincy appointment before the official announcement and before Rohit Sharma’s removal was made public. The young opener, who now leads India in Tests and ODIs, opened up about the moment during his media interaction ahead of the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi.
Shubman Gill admits he was told about ODI captaincy before official word
“Yes, it was announced in the middle of a Test match but I got to know a little before that,” Gill said. “It obviously is a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. So, very excited to lead my country in ODI format.”
For a 26-year-old to replace someone like Rohit Sharma, a modern-day great and a T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy-winning skipper, is no small feat. But Gill seems to be taking the change in stride and is already sounding every bit like a long-term leader in the making.
The rise of a new leader
The past few months have been nothing short of a whirlwind for Shubman Gill. From opening the batting to leading India in Tests and now ODIs, his cricketing graph has been on a steep climb. Yet, the young skipper insists he is not getting carried away.
“The last few months have been very exciting for me. But I'm really looking forward to what the future has. I want to stay as present as possible and don’t really want to look back on what I've been able to achieve or what we as a team have been able to achieve,” he said. “Just want to look forward and win everything that we have in the upcoming months.”
That hunger, that tunnel vision is what sets Gill apart.
Carrying the torch forward
Replacing a seasoned leader like Rohit isn’t easy but Gill’s early words suggest he is not weighed down by legacy. Instead, he is ready to create his own path. With his temperament and methodical approach, India’s white-ball setup seems to be in safe hands.
With the ODI series against Australia fast approaching, all eyes will be on how Gill marshals his troops in his first big assignment as India’s full-time ODI captain.
