According to the emerging reports, Shreyas Iyer has elevated his stature in Indian cricket, having formally entered the white-ball captaincy race following his stellar show for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025. Led by Iyer, the Kings had a memorable outing in the IPL 2025, finishing the competition as the runners-up.

Indian Official's Massive Revelation On Shreyas Iyer's Rise

The Indian team is currently in a transition phase following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20Is and Tests. While Shreyas Iyer continues to be an integral part of India's ODI setup, the batter has yet to find a permanent slot in the other two formats.

However, as per a report by the Indian Express, the BCCI is considering bringing the Mumbaikar back into the Test and T20I teams following his exceptional performance in the IPL 2025.

One of Indian cricket's most influential decision makers apparently told the reputed media agency that Iyer has also formally entered the race for India's long-term white-ball captain, with the board searching for the potential successor of Rohit Sharma, who is at the twilight of his career.

“Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” the official was quoted as saying by Express Sports on the eve of the IPL 2025 final.

Shreyas Iyer's Performance As A Captain In IPL

Hailed for his sublime batsmanship, Shreyas Iyer has been one of the most impressive captains in the IPL. The stylish right-handed batter led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in IPL 2024 before following it up with another final appearance for Punjab Kings the very next season. Thus, his prolific success as a batter and captain might prompt the BCCI to reconsider him for the longest as well as the shortest format.
