"Should MS Dhoni Be Considered A Captain?" Ex-WI Star Finds Loopholes In CSK

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise became the first team of the IPL 2025 season to bow out of the playoffs’ race after losing to Punjab Kings in a final-over thriller. Notably, MS Dhoni was appointed as CSK captain midway into the tournament, after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out due to an injury.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, the CSK has managed to register just a solitary win from their previous five games, and are currently ranked at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table.

Daren Ganga questions MS Dhoni’s appointment

Former West Indies cricketer and prominent commentator Daren Ganga has questioned the appointment of MS Dhoni as captain after the injury exit of Ruturaj Gaikwad. He stated that since Dhoni does not play competitive cricket between IPL seasons, the CSK franchise should have searched for a new captain. He said:

“Is that not a high risk for a team if you're planning for next season, you're pegging your hopes on a player who's not playing competitive cricket between IPL seasons. Isn't that putting yourself at a disadvantage based on that player's fitness and availability to play an entire season? You find yourself back at square one, where you will be searching for a captain, a man who is not part of the entire process of strategic planning and direction for a season. So I feel you're in that constant cycle of development and not progressing.”

Daren Ganga added:

“But my biggest question is, should he be considered a captain in that squad when you 18 years from the start of him leading the side. We all agree theoretically that it's sport, it's cyclical, and leadership has a shelf life. But I feel having a guy like Ruturaj Gaikwad and, in the past, Ravindra Jadeja in that sort of unsettling situation where it seems that MS still has ambitions of captaincy is not a good situation to be in.”

With just two wins from 10 matches of the IPL 2025 season, CSK is ranked at the bottom of the points table. In a bid to avoid an unwanted cellar-dwellers tag, the ‘Yellow Brigade’ will be aiming to conjure some wins late in the tournament.

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the CSK team will now face RCB in match 52 of the IPL 2025 season in Bengaluru. The match will be hosted by the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3.
