Cricket is not just a sport, it’s a game of passion. And once again, that inspiration has come to life as young Bangladesh batter Shamim Hossain openly expressed his admiration for South Africa legend AB de Villiers. After playing a match-winning knock against Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the ongoing series, Shamim shared how much he looks up to the former RCB star and how he aims to follow in his footsteps.

To begin with, Shamim Hossain’s performance against Sri Lanka was nothing short of brilliant. Coming in to bat at number 6, a position where AB de Villiers also worked his magic during his career, Shamim showed calmness under pressure and delivered when his team needed him the most. He smashed 48 runs off just 27 balls, helping Bangladesh post a strong total of 177/6.

As a result, Sri Lanka collapsed in reply, managing just 94 runs. Bangladesh’s victory by 83 runs was their biggest T20I win by runs against any ICC full-member team.

After the match, Shamim spoke openly about his mindset and goals.

“I am not worried about my batting position. The spot I am batting in right now, I feel very confident there,” he said. He added, “Whenever I go out to bat, my plan is to stay positive. Someone has to take risks, and I want to take that responsibility for the team.”

He didn’t stop there. In fact, he went on to praise his idol AB de Villiers, saying,

"I like AB de Villiers' batting, and I always try to stay positive like him. T20 cricket is all about staying positive, and I feel that if I stay positive, I will do well."

Clearly, AB de Villiers’ approach and attitude toward the game have left a lasting impact on Shamim, who hopes to become a finisher like him in the future.

Bangladesh’s win wasn’t just about Shamim. Captain Litton Das led from the front with a brilliant 76 off 50 balls, which included 5 sixes and a four. Litton built a 69-run partnership with Towhid Hridoy (31) and followed it up with a 77-run stand with Shamim. These partnerships gave Bangladesh the edge they needed to dominate the match.

Moreover, Shamim also made an impact in the field. He took a brilliant direct hit to run out Kusal Perera early in Sri Lanka’s innings, setting the tone for the Tigers’ bowling attack.

Just like in the ODI series, Bangladesh lost the first game but bounced back in the second. However, this time, they have a chance to go one step further and seal the series in the final match on July 16.
