Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has finally spoken about the future of Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan’s ODI (50-over) captain. Pakistan’s poor performances in recent matches have raised questions about whether Rizwan should continue leading the team.
Speaking at a private event today, Naqvi clarified that the decision about Rizwan’s captaincy will not be made solely by him but by the selectors.
According to him, head coach Mike Hesson has already submitted his report following Pakistan’s recent ODI defeat against the West Indies.
“Selectors will make a decision. Head coach has submitted his report after our last contested ODI,” Naqvi shared.
“We are going through it, and after mutual consultation, whatever is decided will be conveyed,” he added.
It is worth mentioning that Rizwan took over as Pakistan’s white-ball captain in October 2024, replacing Babar Azam. The 33-year-old wicket-keeper batter started off strongly, leading the team to three straight series wins, including historic victories in Australia and South Africa.
However, things quickly went downhill. Under Rizwan, Pakistan lost a tri-nation series against South Africa and New Zealand, failed to win a single match in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at home, and then suffered defeats in ODI and T20I series against New Zealand and West Indies.
Central Contracts Shake-Up Linked To Poor Performances
Furthermore, Naqvi shed light on another controversial topic - the removal of “Category A” from the newly announced central contracts. He linked this decision to the team’s poor form, stating,
“It was decided on the basis of the performances.”
Adding to the uncertainty, both Rizwan and former captain Babar Azam were surprisingly left out of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. As a result, Rizwan has opted to join the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots for the remainder of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025.
