'Rohit Won 5 IPL Titles, Many Didn't Even Win Once..,' Gambhir Takes A Dig At Kohli

The cricketing world was treated to a spectacle during the Asia Cup 2023 final, where India emerged victorious against Sri Lanka. As India reclaimed the prestigious trophy after their 2018 triumph, the spotlight has shifted to Rohit Sharma's captaincy credentials.

Gambhir takes a swipe at Kohli's trophy drought as captain

Speaking after the game, former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, while lauding Rohit for his impressive leadership in the IPL and Asia Cup 2023, didn't miss the opportunity to take a dig and subtly highlight Virat Kohli's inability to clinch an IPL title. In contrast, Rohit boasts of five IPL trophies under his belt.

“There was never a doubt about Rohit the captain. He won 5 IPL titles. Many didn't even win once,” said Gambhir as he took a swipe at Kohli.

Gambhir further suggested that while achieving success in tournaments like the IPL and Asia Cup boosts a captain's image, the real challenge lies ahead in the World Cup. Commenting on the looming expectations, he recalled how captains including Kohli and Rahul Dravid faced scrutiny after less-than-perfect World Cup campaigns.

The former southpaw hinted that if Rohit's team doesn't rise to the occasion in the upcoming World Cup, similar questions might be directed towards him. However, he firmly believes that the current Indian team has the mettle to reach the World Cup finals.

“But his real test will come in the next 15 days. You have your best 15-18 players in the dressing room now. If they cannot deliver, they there will be question marks. After every World Cup, if the captain is unable to deliver then questions will be raised. Virat Kohli faced it. Rahul Dravid faced it in 2007. If India fail to deliver in 2023, then questions will be raised on Rohit's captaincy. But this team has the ability to make the World Cup final,” concluded Gambhir.
