Team India annihilated Asia Cup 2023 co-hosts Sri Lanka in one of the most lop-sided finals in cricketing history. Mohammed Siraj paved the way for an emphatic win with his six-wicket burst at the top, including four in one over to reduce Sri Lanka to 12-5 at one stage.

Hardik Pandya polished off the tail to fold up Dasun Shanaka and co. for just 50 in 15.2 overs in front of their packed Colombo crowd. As one can expect, openers Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan made light work of the run-chase, shrugging off their deficit with minimal effort in just 6.1 overs.

Even though Siraj and Pandya played major starring roles in the title clash, Indian captain Rohit Sharma followed team’s tradition and allowed junior most member Tilak Varma to take center-stage at the winner’s podium.

Tilak Varma leads team at winner’s podium

Tilak Varma, who shot himself to unparalleled fame with his batting blitzkrieg on his debut Caribbean tour last month, received just one opportunity in the Indian playing XI this 2023 Asia Cup. The 20-year-old, however, failed to make his lone opportunity count as he perished for just five in front of Bangladesh in their dead-rubber Super Four clash.

Regardless, his IPL and national skipper Rohit Sharma asked him to hold the silverware for a picture-perfect shot at the winner’s podium after the match.

India’s Asia Cup 2023 campaign was filled with all-round efforts from all, with each member stepping up at some stage of the tournament.

For starters, Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan counterattacked Pakistan pacers after India’s top-order jitters in the Group Stage. Rohit Sharma notched up three successive match-winning scores in the subsequent three games, while Virat Kohli and KL Rahul charted imperial hundreds against arch-rivals in their Super Four bout.

Kuldeep Yadav also snared nine wickets in his two Super Four outings while Siraj reserved his best for the final.

Team India, under Rohit Sharma, will now face Australia in a three-match home series as part of their World Cup 2023 preparations in the coming weeks.
