Virender Sehwag has predicted Rohit Sharma to top the batting charts in the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India. The former cricketer claimed that Sharma, alongside many openers in the competition, will get enough opportunities to dazzle on batting-friendly Indian pitches.

Sehwag backs Sharma to become leading run-scorer

Virender Sehwag has backed Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-scorer in a World Cup for the second time in succession this year. The former cricketer made the prediction during his recent interaction with the ICC on the latter’s social media channels.

While he claimed that every opener will get good opportunities on Indian wickets, Sehwag admitted his patriotic bias by singling out Sharma, as he believes the performance of the current Indian skipper goes up in World Cup matches. Interacting with the ICC, the 2011 World Cup winning opener said:

“India has good wickets, so I think openers will get good opportunities. If I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma because I am an Indian and I should pick an Indian. When the World Cup comes, Rohit Sharma’s energy levels, his performance goes up. So I am sure he will do well. He is also captain this time, I am sure he will make a difference and score lots of runs.”

Remarkably, Rohit Sharma also finished the 2019 World Cup in England as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 648 runs. He plundered five centuries in the competition, and racked up his runs at an average of over 81.

As part of Sharma’s World Cup 2023 preparation, the cricketer will lead the Indian team in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka. Accompanied by fellow batting great Virat Kohli, his troops will go up against arch-rivals Pakistan to launch their campaign on September 2. The match is scheduled to be played out at Kandy’s Pallekele International Stadium.
