'Rohit Sharma Often Says Tilak Varma...' - Abhishek Nayar Ahead Of IND vs AUS T20Is

Former Mumbai stalwart Abhishek Nayar praised rising young batter Tilak Varma for possessing a "good cricketing brain" with a stamp of approval from Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Nayar revealed from his conversations with Rohit that the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain only has bright things to say about the middle-order left-hander.

Nayar lauded Varma's three-dimensional growth as a cricketer in what has been a rapid rise in the senior Indian set-up. After transcending the heights for MI over the last two editions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Varma made his T20I debut in the Caribbean in August and was even part of the mix in the build of the just-concluded ICC World Cup 2023.

The cricketer's stocks are quite high in the transitioning Indian set-up with his left-hand utility and also the ability to chip in with useful overs as a part-time spin option, an area which requires urgent upliftment in the senior men's side.

"Tilak brings two dimensions of his game to the team. Yes, fielding is a part of it and yes, he can bowl, but what is really important when I say two dimensions are his batting and leadership skills," Nayar told Jio Cinema.

"What you always see with Tilak Varma is fearlessness. He is a young player, but what I have always heard, Rohit Sharma often used to say that he is a great cricketing brain. Because when he plays for MI, he gives good suggestions to Rohit. That part of Tilak is going to be great for Indian cricket," he added.

The 21-year-old has turned out in 10 T20Is and a solitary ODI for India already. Varma couldn't shine in his only One-Day outing against Bangladesh during the Asia Cup 2023 but has mustered his 231 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 142.59.

Varma has a great opportunity at hand via the five-match T20I series against Australia to further raise his stocks by showcasing his all-round talent and ability. The youngster could be a vital cog to India's T20I outfit as they continue to build towards the men's 2024 T20 World Cup next year.
