Karnataka skipper and opening batsman Mayank Agarwal clattered Jammu and Kashmir bowlers with a dazzling century in Ahmedabad in their opening match of the 2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy season. Brandishing his bat at Jammu and Kashmir bowlers for nearly the entirety of Karnataka’s innings upfront, the Indian veteran thrived with 157 scorching runs from just 133 deliveries.

Agarwal goes big at Vijay Hazare before IPL auctions

Winning the toss and opening the innings alongside Ravikumar Samarth, Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal listed a six-laden 157 to mark one of his career-best List A scores. The cricketer shared a 267-run opening stand with Samarth, and additional 60 runs (from just 30 balls) with number three Devdutt Padikkal to take Karnataka past the 300-run mark.

The right-handed opener pounded 11 boundaries and eight sixes in his innings and took a special liking to Jammu and Kashmir new-ball bowlers Rasikh Salam, Yudhvir Singh and Indian international Umran Malik.

The innings marked Agarwal’s 14th List A century, and it occurred mere weeks prior to the planned IPL 2024 auctions in Dubai. The 32-year-old is currently a part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise in IPL.

Mayank Agarwal was roped in by the SRH management earlier this year after spending six seasons at Punjab Kings as one of their senior top-order batters.

While once a regular in the Indian team, the Karnataka batting prodigy has not been considered for national selection ever since his Test appearance in Bengaluru against Sri Lanka back in March 2022.

Overall, the cricketer has played 21 Test matches and five ODIs for Team India since his debut.
