As we inch closer to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, whispers surrounding the future of Mumbai Indians (MI) stalwart Rohit Sharma are gaining traction. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has stirred the conversation with his bold prediction about Sharma’s departure from the five-time IPL champions.

The winds of change started blowing when MI made a pivotal decision ahead of IPL 2024. They reappointed Hardik Pandya as captain, bringing him back from the Gujarat Titans. The move came at the cost of Sharma’s leadership, a role in which he had delivered multiple titles.

The decision raised eyebrows, especially given Rohit Sharma’s iconic status within the franchise. However, MI's disappointing performance in IPL 2024, finishing last on the points table, further fueled the conversation of a possible transition.

Chopra, in a recent video on his YouTube channel, shared his thoughts on Rohit Sharma’s future with MI.

He stated, “Will he stay or will he go? It's a big question. Personally, I feel he will not stay. Whoever is retained will be with the thinking that he will remain with you for three years, unless your name is MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni and Chennai Super Kings' story is very different but Rohit Sharma at MI, I feel he might himself leave or MI might leave him.”

Is Rohit Sharma’s Time With MI Truly Over?

Chopra, while admitting he has no insider information, feels that Rohit Sharma’s time with MI may have reached its natural conclusion. He speculates that Sharma could explore opportunities with other franchises during the trade window instead of entering the auction.

"Anything can happen but I don't think Rohit is going to be retained here. I don't have any information but I feel Rohit will probably be released. He might go to someone in the trade window, that's a possibility that he doesn't go to the auction, but if that doesn't happen, he might be seen in the auction. I feel his journey with the Mumbai Indians is over,"  he added.

However, the former cricketer reassured fans that Suryakumar Yadav, often dubbed ‘SKY,’ will continue to be a part of MI. Following Rohit’s retirement from T20 internationals after India’s 2024 ICC T20 World Cup victory, Yadav was named India’s T20I captain.

With MI’s leadership and roster likely to evolve, Yadav’s presence promises a continued association between the player and the franchise.
