'Rohit Has The Pedigree Of Leadership Success' - Ian Chappell Heaps Praises On The Indian Captain

As India turned the tables on England in the third-innings and transformed their fortunes in the Ranchi Test, former Australia captain Ian Chappell lauded Team India skipper Rohit Sharma and hailed him as the man with a "pedigree of leadership success."

Chappell admired the way the Indian leader marshalled his troops and rotated the great Indian spin troika of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav to skittle out the opposition for 145 when they had taken a priceless first-innings lead of 46 runs.

Ashwin's magnificent 5 for 51 and Kuldeep's wily spell of 4 for 22 helped India turnaround the game they were behind in and set up a chase of 192. While the two superlative bowlers soaked in the praise for their display, Chappell cared to notice the skipper's influence on the proceedings and complimented Rohit.

Ian Chappell Lauds Rohit Sharma

In his column for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell noted how Rohit has never looked short of belief and persistence as a captain despite India missing multiple first-choice players and managed to empower his younger players to maximise their abilities in the wake of a stiff challenge such as England.

"In the sudden shuffling of the Indian side after a prolonged period of selection stability, the leadership of Rohit Sharma is often overlooked," Chappell wrote.

"Rohit has a pedigree of leadership success and his reputation helped him guide a fluid Indian line-up in the right direction. Any failure in his leadership could easily have led this Indian team to faltering when the going got tough," he added.

If India reach home in Ranchi, it would be a significant moment in Rohit's captaincy career to have helped the team retain their series winning streak at home despite the absence of experienced players Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul in the middle-order, with the selectors also fully moving on from Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane.
