Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh is ready to drop himself to number three in the batting order if regular opener Travis Head makes his return to the World Cup 2023 playing XI. Marsh opened the batting for his side in their first four matches of the tournament, after Head sustained an injury on his left-hand in South Africa last month.

Australian selector and former George Bailey have already confirmed that the left-hander will be re-appointed as country’s regular opener the moment he returns to the side.

Mitchell Marsh ready to drop to number 3

Following Travis Head’s injury in South Africa last month, Mitchell Marsh was appointed as Australia’s makeshift opener for their initial World Cup 2023 fixtures. Opening the innings alongside David Warner, Marsh scored 52 against Sri Lanka before pounding Pakistan with a match-winning 121 in Bengaluru.

Despite his recent success with Warner at the top of the order, Marsh is ready to sacrifice his position and demote himself to number three in the batting order if regular opener Travis Head makes a comeback into the playing XI. The cricketer stated the same ahead of Australia’s World Cup 2023 clash against Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. While speaking with the reporters, Mitchell Marsh said:

“He (Travis Head) looked good, a bit of range hitting last night. He says the hand feels good. So, I’m sure if he’s fit, he’ll be available for selection in the team.”

Upon the prospects of batting at number three, Marsh added:

“Very happy to go back down to three. I’ve obviously batted there a lot over the last couple of years, so I feel really comfortable at three. And if and when Travis Head comes back in, I think that’s the best position for me to play for this team.”

Australia, who launched their World Cup 2023 campaign with defeats to India and South Africa, returned back to winning ways with confident triumphs over Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

In a bid to sustain their newfound winning run and to strengthen their chances of a top four finish, Pat Cummins and co. will now face Netherlands in Delhi on October 25.
