 Ben Stokes Avoids Multi-Year Contract From ECB; Here Are Full Details

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has handed out multi-year central contracts to several of their first-choice cricketers. The move marked the first of such instance in board’s history and they announced the same at the halfway stage of England’s World Cup title-defense in India.

As many as 18 cricketers entered a multi-year deal with the ECB, while the likes of James Anderson, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali were among an eight-player batch to sign a one-year contract with the cricket board.

ECB offer multi-year central contracts for the first time

In a bid to counter the popularity of franchise T20 cricket around the world, the ECB has handed out multi-year central contracts to 18 English cricketers, featuring the likes of Jos Buttler and Joe Root.

An official statement of the board reads,

“The ECB has worked closely with the Professional Cricketers' Association and Team England Player Partnership on behalf of the players to reach an outcome for all parties.”

Overall, the signings include a number of England’s World Cup 2023 stars, including captain Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Brydon Carse among others.

Ageing warrior and Test purist James Anderson found himself in a one-year contract bracket while Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood and John Turner entered development contracts with the cricket board. Here is a look at a proper bifurcation of England players as per their central contracts:

ECB three-year central contracts: Harry Brook, Joe Root and Mark Wood.

ECB two-year central contracts: Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Liam Livingstone, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Josh Tongue and Chris Woakes.

ECB one-year central contracts: Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Ben Foakes, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Ollie Robinson, Ben Stokes and Reece Topley.

England Development contracts: Matthew Fisher, Saqib Mahmood and John Turner.
