KKR's pace spearhead Mitchell Starc sunk SRH's famed batting line-up at the Chepauk Stadium in the final of the IPL 2024 season.

Starc's opening spell set the tone for KKR's comprehensive eight-wicket win to end a decade-long title drought for the franchise.

The Australian fast bowler was fittingly adjudged as 'Player of the Match' for his sublime opening gambit. Starc also won the prestigious honour in the first qualifier last week by pummelling SRH with figures of 3-34.

Coming up clutch on the big stage, the 34-year-old reflected on KKR's dominant IPL 2024 season and his experience playing under captain Shreyas Iyer.

Mitchell Starc explains how he managed expectations

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony of the IPL 2024 final, Mitchell Starc praised his KKR teammates for putting up a complete all-round performance throughout the season. He said:

“It was a great night for KKR. What a game. What a season. Two exciting teams in the final. We had a fantastic squad of batters and bowlers. It was nice to be peaking at the back end of the tournament. There were contributions from everyone. Great to contribute personally but nice to see everyone contributing.”

The legendary Australian paceman also praised KKR captain Shreyas Iyer for his astute bowling changes and field placements.

He added that even though his team lost the toss and was unaware of the nature of the wicket in the final, KKR players quickly adapted to the conditions in Chennai.

“That's what you ask for in the final. We lost the toss and had to bowl first. We weren't sure of how the wicket would play. Shreyas was good with the way he used the bowlers and the field placements. The boys did well to adapt to the conditions.”

Mitchell Starc, who shattered numerous auction records by bagging a near US$3 million (Rs.24.75 crores) deal for the KKR, explained that he had gained enough experience in his lifetime of playing cricket to manage the expectations of his hefty price tag. He added:

“There have been plenty of jokes about the money. But it was a long time back since I last played in the IPL. That's what has helped me while managing the expectations. I'm glad that I was experienced and older to manage these things. It was good fun. We have had a good bowling group. It was great to learn and see how these guys go about it.”

Starc's twin match-winning spells in the qualifier and the final helped KKR clinch its third IPL title and their first in nearly ten years.

The legendary fast bowler will spearhead Australia's pace attack in next week's 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.
