Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) scythed through Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final at Chennai to clinch their third IPL title and first in nearly a decade.

After restricting SRH’s famed batting line-up to a moderate total upfront, KKR’s top-order overhauled their task with plenty of time and wickets to spare.

Sharing the new ball with Vaibhav Arora, Australian and KKR pace spearhead Mitchell Starc blitzed through Abhishek Sharma’s defence in the first over of the match. A few moments later, Vaibhav got rid of SRH’s in-form opener Travis Head for a first-ball duck as the ‘Orange Army’ slipped to 6-2 in two overs.

Starc also accounted for number three batter Rahul Tripathi for just nine as SRH reached a troublesome 40-3 by the end of the opening powerplay.


KKR vs SRH Final Highlights: Markram Leads Brief Recovery Before Rana, Russell Intervene

At 21-3, former SRH skipper and middle-order batter Aiden Markram cautiously kept the scoreboard ticking with Nitish Kumar Reddy. The two cricketers overcame KKR’s raging new-ball attack for a while to take their side near the 50-run mark.

However, Reddy’s dismissal at the hands of Harshit Rana and Markram’s false-shot off Andre Russell further pummelled SRH down at 62-5.

With SRH’s top five back in the hut at 62-5, fast bowlers Harshit Rana and Andre Russell blazed past their lower-half with profuse assistance from spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy.

Russell himself finished with impressive figures of 3-19 from his 2.3 overs. After removing a well-set Aiden Markram, the broad-shouldered West Indies all-rounder mopped up SRH’s tail while Rana himself pocketed 2-24 from his end.

Narine and Chakravarthy both chipped in with a wicket each as KKR bowlers collectively enveloped SRH’s entire batting line-up for 113 in less than 19 overs.

Despite the early dismissal of opener Sunil Narine, KKR’s number three Venkatesh Iyer and Afghanistan-import Rahmanullah Gurbaz pummelled SRH bowlers from the outset. The two cricketers shared 91 runs together for the second wicket and ensured KKR reached a commanding 72-1 by the end of the opening powerplay.

Venkatesh Iyer smacked six boundaries and three sixes to extinguish SRH’s last ounce of hope in the first 10 overs of the KKR run-chase itself. The dashing number three top-scored with a sizzling 26-ball 52*, and also listed the winning run with skipper Shreyas Iyer at the other end.

KKR’s explosive top-order brilliance ended up mowing SRH down by eight wickets and 57 balls to spare as they ended their 10-year title drought by lifting the IPL 2024 trophy.
