'Plenty Of Hate Mails From India' - Martin Guptill On Aftermath Of Running Out MS Dhoni

The scars of India's semi-final loss against New Zealand during the 2019 World Cup are still fresh amongst millions of cricket fans across the globe. A direct throw from Martin Guptill ended MS Dhoni's international career without the fans having even the slightest idea of the same.

MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja built a 100+ run partnership to keep India's innings afloat in the 240-run chase. Even after Jadeja perished to Trent Boult, Dhoni kept the scoreboard running from one end and reduced the asking rate to 25 required off 10 deliveries.

With Dhoni on the crease, the chase seemed plausible. However, the former skipper's risk to steal a run proved costly as Martin Guptill hit a bull's eye with a direct throw. Dhoni fell short of inches and walked back, barely holding onto tears.

India lost the remaining wickets in six deliveries to mark the end of the 2019 World Cup campaign. To further add to the pain, MS Dhoni never returned in national colours and retired a year later on the same day. That's what stung fans the most.

Guptill recalls hate emails received from Indian fans

Meanwhile, it seems the fans have still not recovered from that heartbreak as Martin Guptill recalled the orderly of hate he has been receiving since that day. Guptil, currently playing in the Legends League, said the throw was out of sheer luck. He aimed at the stumps with pure instincts, and stars aligned in his favour.

However, the run-out made him a villain in India. Guptill revealed how he still continues to receive all kinds of hate emails.

"In other words, the whole of India doesn't like me. I get plenty of hate mails from there," Guptill said.

While MS Dhoni's international career came to an end, Martin Guptill's career didn't thrive either. He was sidelined from national selection owing to youth influx. Yet the batter tried to prove worthy enough with his grind.

However, the 2023 World Cup snub acted as a last straw. Guptill confirmed that he is a retired international cricketer now. However, he would continue to feature in franchise cricket until his body shut down.
