The high-voltage Pakistan-India clash in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025 was marred by off-field tensions, as the customary pre-match handshake was conspicuously absent. The fixture, played on September 14, was the first encounter between the arch-rivals and the animosity extended beyond the boundary rope.

India's victory was quickly overshadowed by further controversy when their players, led by Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, exited the field without acknowledging the Pakistani team. The incident has sparked a debate on sportsmanship, drawing criticism from former Pakistan captain Younis Khan.

Younis criticises unsporting gesture

Speaking at a media event, the former skipper condemned the post-match actions of the Indian team, labelling them as contrary to the spirit of cricket. However, he also suggested the players were following directives from their government.

“Indian players not shaking hands is against sportsmanship. But they are following their government’s instructions. Still, even if they don’t, Pakistan should win and extend your hand,” Younis advised.

Shifting focus to on-field performance, Younis Khan pinpointed stability as the cornerstone of India’s consistent success. He contrasted this with Pakistan’s frequent team changes, which he believes disrupts the team's balance.

“Neither India is weak nor Pakistan. Their plus point is that there are fewer changes in their team, and that’s why they perform consistently. Too many changes disrupt the combination. Avoid politics, play for the team and for Pakistan, not for yourself,” Younis added.

Looking ahead, the 47-year-old expressed excitement at the prospect of a final between the two rivals.

“If it’s Pakistan versus India in the final, then what a contest that would be. If Shaheen can bat, then why can’t others? He has the ability to become an all-rounder,” Younis remarked.

Nevertheless, India already secured the final berth for Asia Cup 2025 and now Pakistan awaits their fate as they would be facing a wonded Bangladesh on September 25. Pakistan's win against Bangladesh would virtually seal the deal for the Men in Green in the final.
