The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has received high acclaim for its significant contribution to the growth of women's cricket in India, especially from former India captain and current Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly, who attended the 2024 WPL auction in Mumbai on December 9, praised the league for its remarkable impact and foresaw a bright future for the tournament.

Ganguly praises Women's Premier League's impact on Indian cricket

Ganguly, reflecting on the auction and the league's progress, expressed immense satisfaction and optimism. He acknowledged the WPL's tremendous success in elevating women's cricket in India, especially considering the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic. Ganguly highlighted the league's inaugural year as a turning point and anticipates even greater achievements in the future.

“This is a huge tournament, and I'm so happy to see where it has gone from the first year. This was always in our minds for quite a bit of time, but didn't happen because of Covid. But what it did last year for the women cricketers is phenomenal. The tournament last year was brilliant and it's only going to get better,” said Ganguly.

In its second season, the WPL continues to thrive, with the Delhi Capitals, the previous season's runners-up, entering the auction with a budget of Rs 2.25 crore and three spots to fill. The team made strategic decisions by releasing players Jasia Akhtar, Aparna Mondal, and USA's fast bowler Tara Norris, who had bagged the tournament's first five-wicket haul.

The Capitals invested heavily in Annabel Sutherland, securing her for INR 2 crore after a bidding war with Mumbai Indians. Sutherland's acquisition not only made her the first player to be signed by the Capitals at the auction but also the second-most expensive Australian player in WPL auction history.

In addition to Sutherland, the Capitals brought back Aparna Mondal for INR 10 lakh and signed Ashwani Kumari for the same amount, effectively filling their remaining slots.

The 2024 WPL auction was a significant event, with Rs 12.75 crore spent across 30 players, marking a new chapter in the advancement of women's cricket in India.
