Shubman Gill’s innings in the 4th T20I against Australia at Gold Coast left fans with mixed emotions. After a promising start, the Indian opener struggled to maintain momentum, eventually scoring a sluggish 46 off 39 balls. Earlier, India began decently as Gill and Abhishek Sharma stitched a 49-run opening stand in the powerplay without losing a wicket.
However, once Abhishek fell, Gill’s innings lost its fluency as he managed only 20 runs off 21 balls after the powerplay, which also included a six coming off Marcus Stoinis. His inability to accelerate in a match where India batted first and aimed for a big total did not sit well with fans. Social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), was flooded with criticism over his cautious approach.
Here are some of the top reactions from fans on X to Gill’s knock in 4th T20I vs Australia

"Shubman Gill saw how Babar Azam became the number 1 T20I run-getter and decided to follow it.”

"If you think gill will be dropped after this terrorism. You are a fool Simply. He is poster child of Indian cricket no one can touch his place. He will play whatever way he wants. Be thankful that he played odi today not test"
Prashanth (@ps_it_is)
"I think it'd be fair to have some discussions around Gill's spot in the format. In big 2025 the selectors need to be okay to accept that we can have an ODI and Test captain that doesn't need to play T20Is to free up his calendar and also to give someone else a very valid go.”

"Accept it or not, Shubman Gill is the Babar Azam of India."

"Only way I see India not winning the t20 wc next year is by keeping Shubman Gill in the starting 11 that too as an opener. He is the biggest weak link in the team."
Pranav (@LFC_Pranav)
"Shubman Gill is a great Test and ODI batsman but he doesn't suit modern T20I. Gambhir is trying to shoehorn him into the team which is ruining the entire balance. Jaiswal and Samson are being wasted. #AUSvIND”

"The kind of innings that Shubman Gill's played today is the exact sluggish template from which India attempted to break free since the last T20 WC. Back to this, one that offers some odd sense of assurance at the cost of higher runs on the board. #INDvAUS"

In short, the tweets reflect the frustration over Gill's performance, especially his strike-rate in the 4th T20I and the perceived mismanagement of India's squad balance ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
His role as the incumbent T20I vice-captain is seen as an automatic shield from being dropped as well with players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, missing out despite doing nothing wrong at the top for the men in blue in this format.
