Riyan Parag's inclusion in the Indian ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka has sparked significant debate, particularly after he was chosen over Sanju Samson.

This decision drew criticism, especially towards captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir, who previously deemed Samson "undroppable" during his broadcasting days. Despite the backlash, Parag made an impact in the first T20I, contributing significantly with his bowling.

In just his fourth T20I appearance, Riyan Parag scored 7 runs but shone with the ball, claiming three wickets for just 5 runs in 1.2 overs.

His performance highlighted the Indian team management's preference for multi-utility players, an approach that Irfan Pathan endorsed on his X handle (formerly Twitter).

"You will see Riyan Parag getting many chances due to his bowling ability. As a top-order batsman, not many in the country have the ability to roll their arm over. This is where Riyan Parag will get an extra advantage, and rightly so."

Irfan Pathan's comments underscore the value of all-rounders in modern cricket, especially those who can contribute in multiple facets of the game. Parag's ability to bowl both off-spin and leg-spin provides the team with additional flexibility, making him a valuable asset.

India will face off Sri Lanka in the third T20I on July 30, leading the series 2-0. The team will look to secure a clean sweep.
