The stalwarts of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from Test cricket and now Shubman Gill has been handed the responsibility of leading the country in the purest format. His journey starts with a tough England tour, and thus there are many cricket pundits who are not sure whether Shubman Gill's appointment is a good decision or not.
Dilip Vengsarkar Shares His Insights On Shubman Gill's Promotion
Now, Dilip Vengsarkar, the former Indian batter has opened up on the decision to name Gill as Rohit's successor. The former chief selector stated in a chat with Star Sports, that it is a brave decision and added that Ajit Agarkar and company would have thought long and hard about the appointment.
Vengsarkar also stated that Shubman Gill is young and not experienced enough to lead the country in England and added that Bumrah was not selected because of his injury problems. He also mentioned that it is a golden opportunity for Shubman Gill and he should grab it with both hands.
"It's a very brave decision and I am sure that Ajit Agarkar and company must have thought about it over and over again. Because he is young and not experienced enough to lead the side, especially in a England in a five-Test series. Bumrah I think has injury problems, that's what I guess and that's how he was not made a captain."
Many other cricket pundits also congratulated Shubman Gill for his appointment and expressed hope that he will take Indian team forward.
Notably, Rishabh Pant has been named as the vice-captain of the side, and the youngsters would be hoping to surprise everyone with an impressive performance.
The first Test match will start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds and India are eyeing a first series win in the country after the historic victory in 2007.
