One of the oldest First-Class cricket tournaments in the world, the prestigious Ranji Trophy kicked off last week in India, entering into its 89th season.

Named after former Indian cricketer and Ruler of Nawanagar, Ranjitsinhji, the Ranji Trophy is the breeding ground for cricketers who aspire to represent the national team, especially Test cricket.

Mumbai remains the most successful state in Ranji's history, winning 41 titles, including 15 consecutive trophies between 1958 and 1973.

Over the years, several states have managed to break the status quo, where Saurashtra have gained prominence.

For Saurashtra, India's Test specialist and currently out-of-favour Cheteshwar Pujara has been their most prolific run-getter and demonstrated his class in the state's first match this season against Jharkhand, scoring his eighth Ranji and 17th FC double-ton.

In this article, we at OneCricket list down the top 5 batters with most Ranji Trophy double-centuries, since the competitions inception.

One of the highest run-getters in FC cricket during the mid-2000s was Himachal Pradesh's batter Paras Dogra , who has slammed the most double-centuries (9) in Ranji Trophy history.

Dogra , unlike other batters, heavily scored runs in lower-tier of the Ranji Trophy, which kept him away from the limelight. The 39-year-old made his Ranji debut in the 2001-02 edition and was last seen in the last 2023 edition, where he played for Puducherry.

In 80* Ranji matches, the former Rajasthan Royals player scored 6,466 runs with 25 tons and 17 fifties, which include nine 200s, with two (sixth and seventh) coming in the same season 2015-16.

Cheteshwar Pujara - 8*

A batter, who is known for scoring daddy hundreds in international cricket gained fame after scoring heaps of runs in FC cricket for Saurashtra. Pujara showcased a great ability to grind bowlers in the middle and then milk them for runs as the game progressed.

The Saurashtra legend played his first Ranji match against Vidarbha back in 2005 and since has slammed eight double-tons, including two triple centuries and 12 hundred accounting for 3,658 runs.

With his eighth Ranji double-century, the 35-year-old also achieved a unique record of levelling with Herbert Sutcliffe and Mark Ramprakash tally of with the most (17) 200s in FC cricket, in the fourth position, behind Donald Bradman, Wally Hammond and Elias Henry Hendren.

Mukund also scored a century on his Irani Trophy debut, which makes him a member of an elite list of players who have scored centuries on both Ranji and Irani debuts

Ajay Sharma - 7

A player, who could have achieved more, but due to his controversial activities off the field, Delhi's Ajay Sharma could not blossom for India despite playing one Test and 31 ODIs.

Sharma during his 17-year-old FC career, played for Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, slamming as many as seven Ranji Trophy double-centuries, which came in 85 matches, amounting to 7,319 runs, with 31 tons and 20 fifties.

The 59-year-old batter during the 1996-97 Ranji season became the third player to score 1,000 runs in a single season, also featured in four trophy final for Delhi, winning two (1985-86 and 1991-92). However, his involvement in match-fixing led to the BCCI life banning the cricketer in 2000.
