When talking about the best captains of the Indian Premier League, people often talk about the likes of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir, but hardly anyone gives credit or acknowledges Shreyas Iyer, the current PBKS skipper. Time and again he has proven his captaincy skills and it was evident in the ongoing IPL season.
Iyer scripts history with PBKS
Punjab Kings spent a whopping 26.75 crore price to buy Iyer and they made him the captain of the season. The former KKR and DC captain proved his worth once again as he took PBKS to the finals of the tournament and in the process scripted history.
He became the first captain in the history to take three different teams to the finale of the IPL. In 2020, Iyer took DC to the finale but they lost Vs MI. In 2024, he led KKR to their third title and in 2025, he has now taken PBKS on the brink of history.
Iyer, the lucky charm
Prior to the 2019 season, the Delhi Capitals had not reached the IPL playoffs in 6 seasons, but he transformed the team and took them to the knockouts that season. In 2020, he took them one step closer to the title as DC reached the finale but lost Vs MI.
He became the captain of KKR in 2022, and prior to the 2024 season, KKR last won the IPL title in 2014. A decade later, Iyer stormed them to their third IPL title in a dominating fashion Vs SRH.
He then became PBKS captain and after 2014, he took them to their first-ever IPL finale as Iyer led from the front and thrashed MI in Qualifier 2.
