Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting gave a stern warning to Australia ahead of the Ashes opener in Perth while speaking to the ICC Review. The ex-skipper, who has been part of the Ashes itself, opined that the contest is going to be very close but without any draws.
Ponting was fixated with his view that the scoreline will be tight and there won't be any match that will see too much of scoreboard dragging.
Ricky Ponting makes bold prediction for Ashes 2025-26
While speaking to ICC Review host Sanjana Ganesan, Ricky Ponting shared that Perth and Brisbane pitches are to appear as they naturally are, and with reports from Western Australia underlining Perth as the 'Green Monster', Ponting's claim finds floors.
"I don't think there'll be any draws, just the way that England plays. If there's reasonable weather through the Australian summer, we know that the biggest concern for the last 15 years has been Sydney with the number of days we've lost there. Perth and Brisbane this time of year are normally great. So I don't foresee any drawn games, and I just think it's going to be really, really close," Ponting said.
The former ruthless Aussie skipper then adjudged Australia as the winner of the Ashes 2025-26 with a 3-2 verdict but not without a warning, as Ponting believes the visitors are ready to give a tough fight.
"So I'm going 3-2 Australia. The fact that there are no draws. I just think that's how potentially close it could be. And obviously I'm taking everything into account there as well," Ponting added.
Ponting gives subtle warning to Australia
Ponting further cemented his opinion by stating the fact that Australia have held The Ashes urn since 2018 and has lost just four Tests against England. With the new century turned in, Ponting believes England comes as close as winning two matches in the tour.
"The fact is that England has only won four Test matches in Australia this century, and I'm predicting that they're going to win two in this series. So that's how much closer I think it could be," Ponting concluded.
The first Test at Perth is scheduled for November 21, as fans can tune in to watch the contest live from 8 AM IST. Meanwhile, Australia have announced their playing XI for the opener as England fielded XII for the curtain-raiser contest.
