Azhar Ali, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) Selector and Head of Youth Development, has reportedly resigned from his position, ending his 12-month stint in that role, which he has chaired since October 2024.

Notably, the decision from Azhar's side came after many differences that simmered between the former cricketer and the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Azhar Ali unhappy with Sarfaraz's appointment

As per the report from ESPNcricinfo, it is understood that Azhar was put off by the appointment of Sarfaraz Ahmed as the head of Pakistan Shaheens and the U-19 sides. This appointment led to the thought that Azhar's responsibilities are aligned at the same level as Sarfaraz and therefore the former thought that it is unjustified.

As per the report, Azhar Ali sent the letter of resignation a few days earlier, which the PCB has accepted. Azhar, who was a decorated cricketer for Pakistan in Tests and ODIs and also captain of the side, was first brought in as a PCB member of the selection panel for the men's national side in October 2024.

Azhar Ali was also assigned the role of Youth Development Head just a month later. PCB announced on their official website that "Azhar Ali is tasked with shaping the future of Pakistan cricket by designing and implementing comprehensive youth cricket strategies."

Nevertheless, Pakistan cricket will be in turmoil as the 2026 U-19 World Cup is just around the corner and the side is one of the marquee teams alongside India, England, and Australia.

As it is understood, as of now, Sarfaraz Ahmed will continue to serve as the interim youth head in the absence of Azhar Ali till PCB decides to appoint a new member for the vacant role.
