Pakistan's abysmal T20 World Cup 2024 campaign took a turn for the better after defeating Canada by seven wickets in Group A on Tuesday.

Despite this resurgence, the legendary Brian Lara threw cold water on Pakistan’s prospects during commentary on Star Sports as he cast doubt over their chances of advancing to Super 8s.

T20 World Cup 2024: Brian Lara backs underdogs USA to oust Pakistan

Pakistan's journey had been shaky from the start, with a shock defeat in a Super-Over against the USA, followed by a loss to Rohit Sharma's India. These losses left Pakistan's chances hanging by a thread, and even though they've finally struck victory vs Canada, they still teeter on the brink of an early exit.

Lara, with his finger on the pulse of the game, suggested that the true dark horse of Group A is the USA. He opined that while Pakistan still has a shot, mathematically speaking, it's the USA who has the wind in their sails.

“Of course mathematically they (Pakistan) have a chance. I think the USA just got to take care of a win in their last game, they do that and they qualify. But we’re hoping that they get to win plus the USA lose their game. So my money is on the USA, I think they’re full of confidence and they would want to make it to the Super 8 that will be so huge, historic for US cricket,” said Lara.

Meanwhile, as the clock ticks down, Pakistan faces a do-or-die match against Ireland, and the USA also squares off against Paul Stirling and Co in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the group stage.

Set in Lauderhill, these games will not only decide the fate of the teams but could also see Lara's prediction come true, especially if rain plays spoilsport and sends the USA sailing into the Super 8, turning the tables in this exciting T20 World Cup narrative.
