Delhi Capitals (DC) assistant coach Pravin Amre outlined a role clarity for Prithvi Shaw saying that the team expects him to spend a certain amount of time on the crease and face 30 minimum balls to allow DC advanced chances at securing a win.

Rishabh Pant’s Delhi bounced back after two humiliating losses by trashing Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday.

In a 168-run chase, Australia prodigy Jake Fraser-McGurk and captain Rishabh Pant contributed 96 collective runs as DC chased the total with 11 balls to spare.

That being said, Prithvi Shaw’s silent contributon at the top went largely unnoticed. The under-fire opener scored 32 runs off 22 deliveries to help set a platform for Fraser-McGurk, especially after David Warner’s early dismissal.

However, DC assistant coach Pravin Amre did notice Shaw’s efforts and explained how the coaching staff had assigned a specific role to Shaw.

Amre said that for Prithvi Shaw, winning the power-play is critical, and therefore, the team expects him to face a minimum of 30 balls to leave an impact.

“As an opener he (Shaw) has got a role to play, winning the powerplay is also critical. As a a coaching staff we want him to play at least 30 balls because if he plays 30 balls we have more chance to win,” Amre told reporters.

The coach also explained how Shaw’s short innings against LSG was critical as with Warner back in the hut, he helped Jake settle.

“In 22 balls he got 32 and that was also important because we were chasing and his experienced partner (David) Warner got out and that also allowed Jack to settle down. But he being more consistent is good for him as well for the team also,” he added.

Notably, Prithvi Shaw was dropped mid-tournament by DC last IPL season after he managed only 106 runs in eight innings. However, with a chip on his shoulder, the batter utilised his opportunity and slammed 151 runs already in four innings which included a half-century.
