The inevitable happened as the Chennai Super Kings crumbled under pressure and lost their fifth match on a trot in the Indian Premier League 2025. Against a rampant Kolkata Knight Riders side, CSK were average with the bat as the Ajinkya Rahane led side took advantage and handed an embarrassing defeat.

Put into bat, the CSK openers departed cheaply and despite a brief resistance from Vijay Shankar, who scored quick-fire 29, the middle-order crumbled like a pack of cards. It was Shivam Dube, the attacking southpaw who stayed till the end and helped CSK cross the 100-run mark as they were restricted at 103/9.

Did MSD blame Conway, Ravindra?

In reply, KKR made a mockery of the total and chased it down inside 11 overs with the loss of just two wickets. After the game, MS Dhoni, the newly appointed CSK captain spoke to the broadcaster and blamed the batters for their horrendous showing against KKR.

"Well, I feel there has been quite a few nights which have not gone our way. We need to go back to the drawing board and think about the basics which we are doing wrong. We need to accept the challenge and figure out ways to score runs for the team. Today I felt, we didn't have enough runs on the board."

He specifically pointed fingers at the Kiwi duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, who once again failed to give a quick-fire start to the team.

"Our openers are very good batters. They can play authentic shots but we need to build partnerships. They are not the ones who will start slogging. You can't be desperate after having a look at the scoreboard. Partnerships are very important for us. If you start looking for 60 in 6 overs, things will be difficult for us. We can't lose too many wickets inside the powerplay as it makes things very difficult for the middle order batters."

CSK pile on embarrassing record

CSK continue to pile on embarrassing records as this was their fifth consecutive defeats in the IPL and this has happened for the first time.

This was also their biggest defeats in terms of balls remaining, with the game finished with 59 balls to spare. After this loss, CSK need to win 7 out of their remaining 8 fixtures to seemingly go through to the playoffs of the IPL.
