In a major setback for West Indies, the hosts have been hit with an injury blow ahead of their three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting on August 8. Pacer Matthew Forde has been ruled out after dislocating his left shoulder during a training session on Wednesday.
The injury happened when he attempted a diving catch and unfortunately, it means he will miss the entire series.
Johann Layne Replaces Injured Matthew Forde
To replace him, West Indies selectors have called up Barbados young bowling all-rounder Johann Layn. The 21-year-old has been rewarded for some solid performances with West Indies A, particularly in their recent series against South Africa A.
In his short career so far, Layne has played 12 List A matches, taking 13 wickets with best bowling figures of 3 for 55. With the bat, he has scored 124 runs at an average of 17.71. While still inexperienced at the top level, he will be looking to make the most of this opportunity to prove himself on the big stage.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy believes that this series against Pakistan is an important step for the team as they work towards qualifying for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
“Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success,” Sammy was quoted as saying by ICC.
Notably, West Indies are aiming to bounce back after losing the recent T20I series to Pakistan 2-1 and also against Australia series. The first ODI will be played in Trinidad on Friday and the Caribbean side will be eager to start strong.
