In a significant development, the upcoming Maharaja Trophy will not be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Notably, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) failed to get a police clearance due to safety concerns.
According to a report from The Times of India, the KSCA has decided to shift the tournament from Chinnaswamy to the Srikantadatta Narasimha Raja Wadeyar Cricket Stadium in Mysuru. Notably, the tournament will be played from August 11 to 28 and will be played behind closed doors.
Why Did The Police Deny Permission For Chinnaswamy Stadium?
Notably, RCB won their inaugural IPL title on June 3, 2025, following which the team held a meet with the fans at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which resulted in a stampede, leading to 13 fans breathing their last.
Major controversy occurred following the incident, and reports found RCB responsible for the reckless act. Meanwhile, Justice (Retd.) Michael D’Cunha Commission report — inquiring into the June 4 stampede outside the Stadium that caused 11 deaths during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title-winning celebrations — declared Karnataka cricket’s nerve-centre “unsafe for mass gatherings” in its present state.
Thus, to avoid any further incidents at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the police have denied permission to host games at RCB's home ground.
It is worth noting that the KSCA also couldn't shift the tournament to Allur because of a lack of floodlights and seating arrangements.
Chinnaswamy In Doubt To Host Women's ODI World Cup
Meanwhile, the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru is in doubt to host the games in the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup 2025, to be held jointly in India and Sri Lanka. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has not yet obtained permission to host the games from the State government.
It is worth noting that the eight-team tournament will be played from the 30th of September until the 2nd of November with the opening clash between the two hosts slated to be played here, alongside three other games, including the second semi-final.
