Irfan Pathan provided a positive update on Mahendra Singh Dhoni following a meeting with the great Chennai Super Kings (CSK) former skipper ahead of the IPL 2024.

The former India and CSK pacer gave encouraging news for all of the franchise's passionate fans wanting to see the legend fit and firing in the tournament ahead.

Speaking to Star Sports, Pathan said he asked Dhoni about his right knee following a surgery the cricketer underwent during the off-season phase and found out that he is now absolutely fine and preparing earnestly in full fitness for the challenge at hand in IPL 2024.

Notably, it was the knee surgery and its post-rehab phase on which Dhoni had said he would base his availability for one more season of IPL cricket.

The 42-year-old wicketkeeper-batter battled discomfort and pain throughout the IPL 2023 but once the season was done, with his team lifting the trophy, Chennai's proud adopted son went through the knife.

"Last year, Dhoni said he was giving a gift to his fans with his cricket. I met with him a few days ago, he was playing pickleball for two hours non-stop. His knee was fit as it ever was. It's an exciting time for fans; he now has his vintage old look. Will we get the vintage old Dhoni too?" Pathan said.

"His role has changed in the past two years. He comes in lower-order, plays lesser deliveries but hits the big shots, the strike rate is high. It's a small innings but a memorable one. I think there won't be much of a change in that this year," he added.

Dhoni will be playing under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy in the first match of the season against arch-rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22 in Chennai.

The marquee contest will kickstart what could be the man's last IPL campaign and assignment in competitive cricket, with next year's mega auction at the back of CSK and all franchises' mind.
