In a significant development, newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill likely confirmed that he would be batting at the No.4 position in the upcoming five-match series against England. The 25-year-old batter addressed the media, sharing insights into his role, leadership responsibilities, and the team's preparation.

Shubman Gill Confirms His Batting Position

The decision to bat at No.4 comes in the wake of Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket. "After Virat bhai retired, me & GG bhai had a discussion about me batting at that number". (Sahil Malhotra from TOI).

The team, however, has yet to finalise the playing XI for the first Test at Headingley, with Gill noting that the final combination will depend on pitch conditions. “We have one or two different combinations ready. Will have a look at the pitch and take the call,” he added.

It is important to mention that the earlier Rishabh Pant, during a press conference on June 18, confirmed that Gill will bat at 4th position. The Punjab-born cricketer has showcased standout performance in white-ball formats but has yet to fully establish himself as a consistent red-ball player, especially in overseas conditions.

Shubman Gill's Test Record In SENA Countries

Gill has played 32 Tests, and has made 1893 runs with six centuries, but his record in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries raises concern. In 11 Tests in these regions, he averages is only at 25.70, with just two fifties, both in Australia. His performance in England has been especially underwhelming, with just 88 runs in three Tests at an average of 14.66.

Despite his struggles abroad, Gill’s track record in ODIs is much better. With 2775 runs at an average of 59.04, including eight hundred and a double century, he is already seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket. Now, he faces the dual challenge of leading India and solidifying the middle order after the departure of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
