In a big development regarding the make-up of the Indian batting line-up in England Tests, Rishabh Pant has confirmed that Shubman Gill will bat at number 4. The Indian wicketkeeper batter also mentioned that the number 3 position is up for grabs and the decision on the same would be taken soon.
Rishabh Pant revealed the news in the press conference on June 18, as reported by EspnCricinfo. The confirmation means that Shubman Gill will bat at 4 for the first time in his Test career, and India will have a new no. 3 at the start of a new cycle.
"I think there is still discussion going on, who's going to play three, but definitely four and five are fixed. I think Shubman is going to bat at number four, and I am going to stick to number five as of now, and the rest, we are going to keep on discussing about that," Rishabh Pant as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Shubman Gill Gets Ready For A New Test Position In His Captaincy Era
For the last 12 years, Virat Kohli batted at the number 4 position after the great Sachin Tendulkar retired in 2013. Since Kohli's departure from the format, there were rumours that Gill would move down one spot to carry forward the great legacy of his predecessors, and the management has finally decided to try that out in the Headingely Test.
Shubman Gill has scored 1893 runs in Test cricket so far in 32 matches at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds. The right-handed batter started his Test career as an opener but then moved to number 3 in the last WTC cycle. The retirement of seniors has now prompted another change in position for Gill and he would be looking to seal down the spot with consistent scores in his first series as captain for India.
Karun Nair is the front-runner to take the number 3 position after his strong performance for India A recently. Various cricket pundits have also provided the option of Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan, and it would be interesting to see the final call-up of the Indian team management.
