Former Pakistan Shahid Afridi once held the record for the fastest century in ODI cricket, a blistering 37-ball ton against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996. The record stood for nearly 18 years. However, there is an interesting story behind the bat he used to rack up the century.
It was Shahid Afridi himself who revealed that he used the bat belonging to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to score his historic hundred and also shared memories of how the Indian legend reacted to Afridi's confession.
Afridi’s revelation on using Tendulkar’s bat
Afridi shared about using Tendulkar's bat four years back. Afridi shared the story in a YouTube video, as per TNN in 2021.
"I have safely kept the bat with which I played my first innings. The bat created history. It was Sachin's bat and he is one of my favourite players, and I created a world record from his bat. And I am thankful to Waqar Younis for the bat as he was the one who gave it to me when I was practicing before the match. He asked me to play the game with that bat."
In a recent interview with Star Sports India, Afridi opened up about Sachin's reaction after his century and how he got hold of the bat in the first place.
"Maine Sachin se pochha tha ki maine apki bat se 100 Kiya Hai to woh kehate hain ki yaar woh bat se maine zero par bhi out hua hai. (I asked Sachin if I scored a hundred with his bat, and he said, 'I have also gotten out for zero with that bat.')"
Afridi shares story behind playing with Tendulkar's bat
After the show host asked him about how he found Tendulkar's bat, Afridi said that when he was selected to play for Pakistan, he was given a bat by Vicky Bhai, who told him it belonged to Sachin Tendulkar. Afridi later learned that Sachin had originally given the bat to Moin, who then had similar bats made in Sialkot.
"Kyunki mera Pakistan ke liye naam aaya, to mujhe pata chala ki mujhe open karna hai. Toh Vicky bhai ne mujhe bat diya aur bola ki yeh Sachin ka bat hai. Maine kaha, 'Achcha, yeh mera favourite player ka bat hai?' Baad mein pata chala ki Moin bhai ko Sachin ne bat diya tha, aur Moin bhai ne usi tarah ke bats Sialkot mein banwaye the. Tab mujhe pata chala."
The revelation was a candid one and it had the panel all smiles. Meanwhile, both Afridi and Tendulkar's former cricket teams, Pakistan and India respectively are on their way to making the best out of the Champions Trophy 2025 campaign.
While Pakistan have started off with facing New Zealand on February 19, India will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. Both India and Pakistan will be facing off each other in a highly-anticipated clash on February 23.
