On Saturday, June 21, Rishabh Pant scripted history by scoring his seventh Test hundred, surpassing MS Dhoni to become India’s most successful keeper-batter.
Pant played a brilliant knock of 134 runs off 178 balls, featuring 12 fours and six sixes. The southpaw celebrated his milestone in style with a somersault, electrifying the stadium atmosphere. The excitement was shared by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who was elated in the commentary box.
Sunil Gavaskar Takes A U-Turn On Pant
This was a special moment for Pant, as Gavaskar—who had famously criticised him with the “Stupid, stupid, stupid” remark during BGT 2024 after Pant played a reckless shot—now praised him unreservedly, repeatedly calling his innings “Superb, superb, superb” on air.
“Superb, superb, superb. Absolutely terrific by the young man,” remarked Gavaskar during commentary.
Pant Reacts to Gavaskar’s Praise
Before the start of play on Day 3, Cheteshwar Pujara—now part of the broadcasting team—caught up with the 27-year-old Pant during training and asked for his thoughts on Gavaskar’s change of heart.
True to his usual demeanour, Pant acknowledged the praise and shared how he used setbacks as motivation for a strong comeback, expressing happiness at executing his plans.
"Feeling toh vahi hai jo aapko hai is samay. Bahut accha lagta hai, jab aap apni khaamiyon pe work karte ho. Jo setback hai usko comeback mein change karte ho. Vahi waala thought process tha. Maine kara hoga aisa but luckily main usko change kar paya vaisa. Hard work karke, focus aur displine rakh ke. Toh woh bahut exciting tha mere liye," remarked Pant speaking to Sony Sports.
Pant Having A Test Match To Remember
Prior to this Test match, Pant was under immense criticism after a poor IPL with Lucknow Super Giants. Things became bad to worse as he also faced the flak after being named Shubman Gill's deputy ahead of Jasprit Bumrah for the ongoing WTC cycle. However, the southpaw turned things around with a century.
On Day 3, the 27-year-old also completed 150 catches in Test cricket and is having a great game behind the wickets as well.
