In a stunning turn of events, legendary former captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed his openness to taking on the role of head coach for the Indian men's cricket team. The 53-year-old, renowned as one of India's most successful captains, currently serves in administrative roles but confirmed his interest in the coaching position when queried.

Ganguly Throws His Hat Inside The Coaching Ring

Essentially, Sourav Ganguly praised current coach Gautam Gambhir's performance, noting his recovery after a slow start and crucial Champions Trophy victory. Ganguly emphasized the significance of the ongoing England series for Gambhir's early coaching tenure.

“I never really thought about it because I got into different roles. I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) president," Ganguly said as quoted by PTI.

Regarding the coaching possibility, Ganguly became a bit diplomatic and dicey confirming nothing at all.

“We’ll see what the future holds. I’m just 50 (53), so let’s see what happens. I’m open to it. We’ll see where it goes," Ganguly said.

Ganguly Praises Gambhir's Work

Discussing Gambhir's work, Ganguly observed that the India coach is excelling in his job.

“Gautam (Gambhir) is doing a good job. He started off a little slow, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but he picked up with the Champions Trophy. This is going to be a big series (vs England). I haven’t seen him from very close in this role, but I know he is very passionate... He’s very straightforward, he sees things clearly, and he’s very open about what he feels, about the team, players, people, everything,"  Ganguly concluded.

Ganguly advocated for patience with Gautam Gambhir's development. He mentioned that Gambhir is only a year into the coaching role and called the ongoing England tour an important one for him.
