Indian captain Rohit Sharma has called for an increment in the number of women’s Tests after Harmanpreet Kaur and co. trounced England and Australia in back-to-back matches in Mumbai earlier this month. The opening batsman, currently in South Africa for a two-match Test series against the hosts, claimed that several members of his side were watching the women’s Tests live and added that he loves watching women cricketers play red-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma backs more women’s Tests

The Indian women’s team, under Harmanpreet Kaur, registered their first-ever Test victory over Australia by defeating them at the Wankhede Stadium in December 2023. Remarkably, the ‘Women in Blue’ also ravaged the visiting Englishwomen just a few days ago by 347 runs to signal their home Test dominance.

Men’s captain Rohit Sharma, currently in South Africa along with the rest of his troops, said that several players in the side were watching and supporting the women’s team by watching their fixtures live within their hotel rooms. He also threw his support over increasing the number of Test matches for women cricketers in the near future.

While speaking at the pre-match press conference with the official broadcasters of India’s series against South Africa, Sharma said:

“I love watching Women's play Test cricket, won against England & Australia - we were watching here live, it's so pleasing to see and hope they get to play more Tests in future.”

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, is bracing himself to lead Team India for their two-match Test series against South Africa. The series also marks his return to the side following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup in November 2023.

The legendary Indian opening batsman recently distanced himself from team’s T20I home series against Australia, and also from the white-ball fixtures in South Africa. The first of the two Test matches will be played out at Centurion Park between December 26 and December 30.
