Shubman Gill’s debut year as Gujarat Titans’ skipper has been a masterclass in humility. Reflecting on the role the young skipper admitted his learnings.

“As a Captain, I have learned a lot of new things - in my first year as the Captain, I think the most interesting and challenging thing about Captaincy is that everyday you learn something new about players and yourself,” said Gill in a press conference. 

Gill's candour underscores a shift from individual brilliance to collective stewardship. While GT narrowly missed the IPL 2024 playoffs, Gill’s tactical experiments hinted at a leader willing to gamble for growth.

Form vs. Responsibility

Gill’s 2024 IPL campaign mirrored his team’s turbulence. With 426 runs at a strike rate of 135, his numbers paled against his 2023 exploits of 890 runs. Critics questioned if captaincy diluted his flair, but a defiant 104 against CSK and a 48-ball 89 vs. CSK silenced doubters. 

“I learned all of that about players & myself and realised what all I need to work on to become a better Captain,” added Gill.

GT Looks Up To Gill

GT now bets wholly on Gill’s vision for their second IPL title win. The franchise retained him as captain for 2025, banking on his maturity to groom talents like Sai Sudharsan and Sai Kishore. 

GT’s auction strategy also aligns with Gill’s emphasis on “flexible roles,” and explosive batting power. As he reshapes GT’s identity, his own evolution, from prodigy to protégé, could define India’s next-gen leadership ethos.
